FORMER US ARMY PARATROOPER

Alan Buckalew enlisted in the United States Army at just 17 years old, only months before the attacks of September 11, 2001 — the beginning of a lifetime dedicated to service. As a U.S. Army Paratrooper and Noncommissioned Officer, Alan served around the world, including multiple combat tours in Afghanistan. During his final combat deployment in 2008, he and his unit were awarded Valorous Unit Citations in recognition of their actions in combat.

In 2011, Alan was medically retired from the Army due to injuries sustained while serving his country. But for Alan, retirement from military service was not the end of his commitment to others — it was the start of a new mission to continue serving his community and country in a different way.

SOCIAL WORK AND VICTIM ADVOCACY

After leaving the United States Army, Alan Buckalew used the GI Bill to continue his education and prepare for a new chapter of service. He enrolled at the University of South Carolina Upstate, where he earned a degree in Psychology with a minor in Child Advocacy Studies, along with coursework in Juvenile Criminal Justice. Alan graduated as Valedictorian, reflecting the same discipline and commitment that defined his military career. He later pursued a Master’s Degree in Social Work at the University of South Carolina in Columbia while dedicating his career to serving vulnerable families and children across South Carolina. Alan worked as a caseworker for the South Carolina Department of Social Services, served as a victim’s advocate, and mentored young people who had experienced abuse, neglect, and other forms of childhood adversity through nonprofit organizations in Greenville and throughout the Upstate. From the battlefield to the community, Alan has devoted his life to protecting and serving others.

STRUGGLING VICTIMS TO THRIVING SURVIVORS

While pursuing his graduate degree, Alan Buckalew worked on the front lines serving South Carolina families as a caseworker and advocate for vulnerable children. His work ranged from helping struggling families access critical resources to combat poverty, to standing beside young victims of sexual and physical abuse as both a case manager and victim’s advocate in the courtroom. Drawing from his own experiences overcoming childhood adversity, Alan dedicated himself to helping others transform hardship into hope, living by the mantra that every struggling victim has the potential to become a thriving survivor. Then, in the midst of his work and studies, Alan faced the greatest personal challenge of his life. He was suddenly diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a rare and life-threatening neurological disorder that left him completely paralyzed for several months. The illness interrupted every aspect of his life — but it did not break his determination to serve others. Through resilience, and perseverance, Alan fought his way back to recovery. Today, Alan continues his lifelong commitment to service by caring for elderly and disabled clients as an in-home healthcare aide, assisting individuals living with physical disabilities and cognitive conditions such as Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. No matter the challenge, Alan has never stopped answering the call to serve.

For years, Alan Buckalew has partnered with local nonprofit organizations throughout the Upstate to give back to the community he calls home. From helping restore local waterways and parks to supporting projects and programs that strengthen neighborhoods and protect natural resources, Alan has remained committed to building a stronger future for the next generation. His dedication to service extends beyond politics — it is rooted in his belief that every child deserves to inherit a cleaner, safer, and more united community.

Motivated by his belief that every voice matters, Alan became an outspoken advocate for the rights of working families, veterans, and everyday citizens across South Carolina. Alan believes government should serve the people — not powerful special interests or political insiders seeking personal gain and greater control. His activism has been driven by a commitment to accountability, transparency, and defending the democratic values that generations of Americans have fought to protect.

Today, Alan Buckalew continues his lifelong mission of service by stepping forward to serve as an elected representative for the people of his community. From the battlefield, to advocating for vulnerable families, to serving neighbors here at home, Alan’s life has been defined by a commitment to putting others first. Now, he is seeking the opportunity to bring that same dedication, integrity, and sense of duty to the Statehouse — to be a strong and independent voice for his constituents, to fight for working families, and to ensure the people of South Carolina are represented with honesty, accountability, and compassion.

I will tackle issues that actually effect South Carolinians,

Not engage in senseless and manufactured culture war battles...

The divisive rhetoric is by design and a for-profit business, manufactured for the imagination to divide and conquer. This is not a war of left vs right, but rather a war of top vs bottom. South Carolina has ranked amongst the top 3 fastest growing states for over a decade. The Upstate in particular, has ranked as one of the fastest growing municipalities in the entire country for a few decades. However, we have ranked near bottom in almost every category: education, infrastructure, wages, women's healthcare, etc. The expression is growth 'AND' prosperity, yet we are not experiencing much of the latter. While those that occupy the middle-class in our state are working multiple jobs and still struggling to put food on their plates, gas in their tanks, and to get into school to change their lot, current House reps have voted to give themselves a raise and focused on satisfying the demands of their big Corp donors! South Carolina has been governed by a rather large Republican majority for over 20 years! Honestly ask yourself this question: How has their leadership improved your life? I believe you may agree that it is long overdue for us to try something else! Below are just a few previews of the ideas that I have to increase our revenues in order to invest into improving our quality of life here in South Carolina:

Wages and Tip-Based Industries

Wages and Tip-Based Industries

Wages and Tip-Based Industries

Alan Buckalew supports eliminating taxes on tips because hardworking service industry employees deserve to keep more of the money they earn. But Alan also believes tax relief alone is not enough to address the financial challenges facing workers across South Carolina. For many tipped employees, a tax exemption may only provide limited relief at the end of the year while the day-to-day cost of living continues to rise. South Carolina’s tipped wage remains among the lowest in the nation, with many service workers earning just a few dollars an hour before tips. In some cases, restaurant workers and servers can spend more on transportation and parking for a shift than they earn in base pay on a slow day. Alan believes that is unacceptable. Alan supports policies that strengthen wages, improve working conditions, and ensure economic growth benefits the people who keep our communities running every day. He believes putting more money in the pockets of working families helps local businesses, strengthens the economy, and builds a more stable future for South Carolina workers.

AI Development and Regulation

AI is the future; there is no stopping it. Alan Buckalew believes artificial intelligence will play a major role in the future of our economy and society, and South Carolina must be prepared to meet both the opportunities and challenges that come with it. While AI and large-scale data centers can bring investment and technological advancement, Alan believes growth must be balanced with responsible oversight that protects workers, communities, natural resources, and taxpayers. As major technology companies expand across the country, South Carolina must ensure these projects provide meaningful benefits to local communities — not just profits for corporate executives and outside investors. Large data centers consume enormous amounts of land, water, and energy, often while creating relatively few permanent jobs. Alan believes companies seeking to build and operate these facilities in our state should meet strong standards for environmental responsibility, energy sustainability, infrastructure investment, and local economic impact. Alan supports common-sense regulations that encourage innovation while protecting South Carolina families, workers, and communities. He believes any company benefiting from our state’s resources should also invest back into the people and communities that make that success possible.

(The current data center in Spartanburg occupies 600 acres, 850k sqft, requires a 400-megawatt energy production increase while only bringing 150 jobs)

Cannabis Medical/Recreational

Cannabis Medical/Recreational

Alan Buckalew supports the legalization of medical cannabis and believes South Carolina should have an open and honest conversation about broader cannabis reform. For patients battling cancer, individuals receiving end-of-life care, and first responders and veterans coping with PTSD, access to medical cannabis could provide meaningful relief and improve quality of life. Alan also recognizes the economic opportunities cannabis reform could create for South Carolina. Legalization could open new markets for local farmers, create jobs, and generate significant new revenue that could be reinvested into schools, infrastructure, public safety, and community programs across the state. In addition, Alan believes non-violent cannabis offenses should not continue to overcrowd jails and burden taxpayers with unnecessary costs. By focusing law enforcement resources on serious crime instead of low-level marijuana offenses, South Carolina can create a more efficient and fair justice system while strengthening public safety by cutting off a source of funding that emboldens and arms our adversaries both at home, and abroad.

These are just a few of the problems/solutions that I intend to address at the Statehouse

VOTE! VOTE! VOTE

Voting is the sacred duty of all Americans! In a time of unprecedented Gerrymandering and election meddling we must make it "TOO BIG TO RIG!"
